10 Ways Business.gov Can Help You Run Your Business - Operations and Finance - Online Merchant Network

The U.S. Federal government websites keep improving, bringing government closer to the people.
My latest favorite government website is the new and improved Business.gov.
This recently revamped site is managed by the Small Business Administration. Not long ago I spent a number of hours exploring Business.gov and asking questions of the SBA personnel via email. It all culminated in my writing an article outlining ten useful — even unexpected — features of Business.gov, such as this one

The Tax Foundation - America Celebrates Tax Freedom Day®

Tax Freedom Day answers the basic question, "What price is the nation paying for government?" We divide the most authoritative figure for total tax collections by the most authoritative figure for the nation's income. The answer this year is that taxes will amount to 32.7 percent of our income. We convert that percentage into days worked, and if we started on January 1, it would take until April 30. That's when we could start keeping some of our earnings.

Is It Better to Buy or Rent? - New York Times

Dabbawala - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dabbawallas. These men deliver thousands of lunches every single day in Mumbai... from the person's home to their office, hot and fresh.
The reported error rate is one in six million.
How is this possible? How do you create and run a service with thousand of employees, no technology and a poorly-educated workforce and have better than six sigma quality?
Simple: the dabbawallas know their customers. If they rotated the people around, it would never work. There's trust, and along with the trust is responsibility. By creating a flat organization and building relationships, the system even survives monsoon season.

Personal trainer uses Wii for workouts - Engadget

As anyone who's managed to get their hands on a Wii will no doubt have already discovered, it's relatively easy to work up a sweat and lose some pounds using Nintendo's little white box. Now, the real life activity that's required to succeed at virtual Wii Sports has been picked up on by a personal trainer from Glasgow, Scotland: Zander Urquhart found that kids and adults alike don't mind doing exercise when it's accompanied by on-screen actions by the player's Mii, and is using the Wii specifically as an exercise machine. Zander is apparently the first fitness expert to have seen the potential for the Wii in the field of personal training, but we have a strong feeling he won't be the last. Even if the idea doesn't catch on, we suspect he'll have a healthy stream of geeky customers coming into the gym as long as the Wii stock shortage continues to exist.

Google Voice Local Search

Google has announced a new labs project, a free 411 service. The Google Voice Local Search is an experiment, but it aims to get users fully automated access to local business information.

The GOOG 411 service holds the same information that would typically be found on Google.com, but for times when you just cant get to an internet connection and all you have access to is a cell phone or home phone, this is your next best bet.

The service is free to use, and Google does not charge businesses for connecting customers to them. It is still in an experimental form, and only available in English in the US, for US business listings. To try out the service, dial 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411) from any phone

Software lets you create cybertwin

An Australian company has found a way for bloggers to chat with their friends online without having to be anywhere near a computer or communications device.
Sydney-based outfit MyCyberTwin.com has developed an application that uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology to simulate intelligent conversations.
While such applications, known as chatterbots, have been around for a couple of decades now, MyCyberTwin is one of the first programs to allow users to actively educate their online personas to best suit their own.
The online clone can chat on a user's behalf through social networks such as MySpace, blogs, dating sites and MSN instant messaging.
For some, it's the online equivalent of the sort of autopilot conversations people have when they've been asked the same question a million times over.
But for others, it could potentially be an effective solution to managing information gathering and dissemination for visitors to websites.
